Study for Christ Robed by Soldiers (1922)

Drawing, Pencil on paper, 452mm x 380mm
Christ being roughly handled by a soldier into a robe

A scene from the last days of Christ’s life. During the mocking of Christ he is dressed in a scarlet robe to be presented to the crowd who will decide his fate. Spencer concentrates on the drama and the pathos of Christ being roughly handled by one of the soldiers as he fits Christ’s arm awkwardly into the robe. A study for the oil painting The Robing of Christ, 1922 (Tate).
