Bathers at Odney (1943-44)

Drawing, pencil on paper, 579mm x 449mm
men at Odney weir about to go for a swim

The drawing is close to the earlier ‘Sunbathers at Odney’. Spencer had been preoccupied with Odney for some time and wrote in a letter of 1917 to Desmond Chute (Stanley Spencer Gallery collection), ‘we all go down to Odney Weir for a bathe and a swim …I feel fresh awake and alive; that is the time for visitations.’
