Ahead of the opening of our new exhibition, The Cookham Brotherhood, we were delighted to welcome Paul Gough to give us an insight into the life and work of Gilbert Spencer, painter, professor and younger brother to Stanley Spencer. Drawing on his extensive research into the lives and artistic careers of the brothers Paul illustrated their lifelong bond, their friendship and also their rivalry. Paul expertly brought to life Gilbert’s extraordinary versatility as a painter of the English pastoral, its agricultural potency, and his brilliance as both portraitist and mural painter.
Paul Gough is a painter, writer and broadcaster, a regular speaker about the Spencer family, and Vice-Chancellor of Arts University Bournemouth.
