Annual Lecture 2026
Stanley Spencer Gallery Annual Lecture
Holy Trinty Church
Thursday 16 April 2026, 6.45pm
A very private collector
Stanley Spencer and the Wilfrid Evill Collection.
Wilfrid Evill was one of the most significant collectors of mid-twentieth century, yet his name is known to very few. His collecting, especially of the work of Stanley Spencer, was largely ignored until recently, but we can now see that not only did Evill amass an incredible range of paintings and sculpture, but that it helps shed new light on the taste of his times and our own.
James Rawlin is an independent art adviser, curator and writer, specialising in c20th British Art. James has worked in this field for almost thirty-five years, heading departments at both Phillips and Sotheby’s, and since 2013 has run his own business working with collectors and institutions at home and abroad.
