Hilda Sorting Newspapers (1929-30)

Drawing, Pencil and sepia wash on paper, 383mm x 305mm
Hilda sorting newspapers

Drawn during the Burghclere period, this vivid sketch gives a glimpse of Hilda in a characteristic pose. Also a Slade-trained painter, Hilda played a crucial role in Spencer’s life. They corresponded regularly, and he continued writing to her even after their divorce in 1937 and her death in 1950. These ‘letters’ could be up to a hundred pages long.
