The artist Unity Spencer painted this portrait of her father in ‘Cliveden View’. He had asked what she would like to do, suggesting ‘a Kopf’ (head) as he wished to do some reading. Her view includes the rolled-up canvas of ‘Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta’ on which he was then working. At the time, Spencer was also painting his double portrait of Mr and Mrs Baggett (Stanley Spencer Gallery), who decided to purchase this portrait too.
