Sailing Through Spencer’s Cookham: A Thames Tribute on 30 June 2025
On the anniversary of Stanley Spencer’s birthday, the Stanley spencer Gallery pays tribute to the artist with a unique event that blends art, history, and the beauty of the River Thames.

A Journey Through Art and Landscape
Stanley Spencer’s deep affection for the Thames was more than aesthetic—it was spiritual. The river, winding gracefully through his native Cookham, was a recurring motif in his work and a symbol of his profound connection to the village. Join us on 30 June 2025, to celebrate that connection aboard the historic steam launch Alaska, built in 1883 just upriver at Bourne End and now beautifully restored.

Set Sail on the Alaska
The Alaska will depart from the Ferry Inn landing stage for two special sailings at 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm, each lasting approximately one hour. Guests will be welcomed aboard with a complimentary drink and the opportunity to meet Dr Amy Lim, curator of the acclaimed exhibition A Marvellous Atmosphere: Stanley Spencer and Cookham Regatta. As the boat glides past Cockmarsh and Winter Hill, passengers will see the very landscapes that inspired Spencer’s visionary art.
A cash bar will also be available on board.
