Pinning a Shirt to Dry on a Tent (1949)

Drawing, Pencil on paper, 579mm x 449mm
Soldier pinning a shirt on tent to dry

Volume 4 of the Astor Collection of drawings.

Four Scrapbook drawings recall Spencer’s service in Macedonia during the First World War. An exact depiction of army bell tents had already appeared in the murals at the Sandham Memorial Chapel. Spencer dwells lovingly on pattern, from the soldier’s puttee to the herringbone weave of his shirt.
