The Betrayal was composed at a time of great confidence for Spencer who later noted ‘When I left the Slade and went back to Cookham I entered a kind of earthly paradise. Everything seemed fresh and to belong to the morning’.  The scene takes place behind the adjoining gardens of Fernlea , the Spencer family home in Cookham High St and The Nest, the property next door.
