The figures almost certainly represent the artist and Daphne Charlton who stayed together at The White Hart Inn in the village of Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire. Spencer wrote: ‘A part of the religious expression of desire. All things such as these incidents, the many ordinary happenings between two lovers is all a part of the love experience. They make love through everything between themselves.’
