All the main Shipbuilding on the Clyde works have the same long narrow shape which enhances the impression of the scale of the activities and the claustrophobic conditions in which the shipbuilders toiled. Spencer said of the shape that ‘the continuous character helps to preserve the impressions one gets in the shipyard itself by wandering about among the varied happenings’.
