Study for Creche Series (1940)

Drawing, Pencil and water colour on paper, 381mm x 629mm
Virgin Mary and Elizabeth embracing over the fence

The Crèche Series was to centre on the New Testament scene of The Visitation, surrounded by home-life scenes drawn from Spencer’s memories. The solid block of purple in the middle is in fact the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth embracing over the fence that divided the front gardens of Fernlea and Belmont in Cookham High Street. Spencer and his brother Gilbert swing on the front gate before them and Spencer’s brother Sidney cuts the hedge beside them. The study illustrates Spencer’s working methods well and sadly did not result in a finished painting.
