Apotheosis of Hilda
Drawing, Pencil on paper, 718mm x 947mm
Spencer’s projected Church House was to have a chapel dedicated to Hilda with a final tribute to her in the form of an enormous central painting ‘The Apotheosis of Hilda’ which was left unfinished on his death. All of the twenty four preparatory drawings for the painting have been lost and this tracing is believed to have been taken from one of them. The scene is set on Hampstead Heath in the days of Spencer’s courtship to Hilda and it symbolizes their togetherness through the love letters they continually wrote to each other.
