Volume 2 of the Astor Collection of drawings. 1943-4 Spencer wrote of the drawings in Volume 2 of this series of pencil compositions ‘they each (so far) have three main figures namely me, a girl, & a bearded figure I call the Holy Ghost…The young man figure is the me taking my part in what is being adored.’ Throughout his career, Spencer appeared in many of his figurative works, as well as featuring in a series of self-portraits. This is a Cookham scene, as indicated in one of Spencer’s lists of titles. Lent by private collector
