Portrait of Marjorie Metz

(1958)

Painting, Oil on canvas, 1412mm x 730mm

Marjorie and Philip Metz were friends of Spencer for his last fifteen years; she later became Chairman of the Friends of the Stanley Spencer Gallery. The proposal for the portrait came from the artist, who arrived at the sitter’s home with a roll of canvas which he cut to size on the kitchen floor. The twenty-one sittings each lasted five to six hours.
